Recommendation Guide

Find the right product by identifying your animal's condition below.

Good Practices for All Skin Issues

Treat every issue as though it is contagious. Restrict towels, tack, and brushes to the affected animal only. Wear gloves, and always wash your hands after treating.

Horses

Rain Rot

The most common bacterial skin disease in horses. Lesions are usually small but widespread, characterized by the signature "paintbrush lesion".

Choose MEDICA TREATMENT WASH if you are able to bathe, or MEDICA LOTION if you are not. Use one product once daily until healed.

Scratches / Mud Fever

Typically found on the pasterns as scabby or crusty sores, often caused by persistent damp conditions.

Choose MEDICA SALVE. Dry lesions thoroughly, then apply once daily.

Cannon Bone Crud

Crusty, often black lesions appearing on the front of the rear cannon bones.

Choose MEDICA TREATMENT WASH for its cleansing effect. Use once daily until the area looks normal.

Sunburn

Horses with white muzzles are especially susceptible. Symptoms often include pink, crusty, or flaky skin on white facial markings.

Choose MEDICA SALVE: a thin layer applied once daily soothes burned skin.

Hives (Rain Rot)

True hives are a systemic allergic reaction that topicals cannot cure. However, what is often diagnosed as "hives" is frequently the early stage of Rain Rot, appearing as multiple bumps that eventually lead to hair loss. A good rule of thumb: true hives rarely have scabs or crusts, whereas Rain Rot will.

We recommend using MEDICA TREATMENT WASH and LOTION to address these symptoms.

Sweet Itch

An allergic reaction to insect bites. Common symptoms include persistent rubbing of the mane, tail, or belly until hair falls out.

Choose MEDICA SALVE: Calendula oil acts as a natural steroid to cut the itch, while essential oils help repel insects.

Facial Hair Loss

Begin with MEDICA TREATMENT WASH to clean off debris and dead skin, then towel dry thoroughly. Follow with MEDICA LOTION once daily.

Dandruff

Sometimes simply flaky skin, other times caused by fungus.

Choose MEDICA TREATMENT WASH for its keratolytic effects. Apply once daily or every other day.

Ringworm

A fungal infection typically appearing as circular patterns of hair loss with flaky or red skin. It is highly contagious.

Choose MEDICA LOTION and apply once daily until new hair appears.

Dogs

Hot Spots

Hairless, open sores often found on the paws.

Apply MEDICA DOG SALVE once daily until healed. Walk your dog for 10–15 minutes immediately after application to prevent licking.

Skin Allergies

Often caused by food or environmental allergens, MEDICA DOG WASH and LOTION can both help alleviate symptoms.

Use once daily until the skin looks normal.

Bacterial & Fungal Skin Infections

Often appearing as red, irritated, or inflamed skin.

Choose MEDICA DOG WASH or DOG LOTION. Use once daily until the skin looks normal.
